Mali Experience Tours is dedicated to the fight for the environment and the survival of local peoples and traditions.

One of the many challenges facing Mali is "desertification." The Sahara Desert in northern Mali is encroaching on farmland. It is estimated to be growing by an area the size of New York State every decade.

Environmental groups recommend that for every tree cut down, at least one tree should be planted to replace it. This attracts groundwater, prevents further topsoil erosion and preserves farmable land.

Malian people farm for survival; a concern for the land is a concern for the people.

We invite every visitor to plant a tree during your vacation. We also offer special tree-planting programs.

So, dear friends of the environment, come to Mali for your vacation and leave behind a gift that will last generations!
The trees we plant provide fruits, medicines and materials for daily life:

Mango. Provides shade, fruit and plenty of green growth.

Acacia. Provides shade, leaves for animal forage, and the bark is used as a traditional cough medicine.

Tamarind. Its fruit is drunk as a juice and used in traditional medicine as a diuretic. The bark is used as a traditional antibiotic.

Cæcedra. Another tree that provides a defense against desertification similar to the others.

Baobab. The tree most associated with Africa, it bears fruit, its bark is used to make traditional textiles, its leaves are crushed to make a sauce that is a staple in African cooking (Tô), and the baobab has many legends attached to it.
